Chapter Fourteen

When Kathryn had first mentioned the idea of meeting both sides of the family on Thanksgiving, it seemed perfect. They would go to one house and then the other. Kill two birds with one stone, right?

But as Pam sat in the passenger seat of Kathryn’s Jeep, her stomach in a giant knot, she started to wonder if she really knew what she had agreed to.

“Thanks for coming with me today, Pam. I mean, you didn’t have to. I hope you know that.”

Pam looked over at Kathryn and smiled. “I know. But I totally agree with you. I think it’ll be good. And then we can go over to my parents’ afterward.”

“Is this too soon, though? I mean, we haven’t really been together or whatever for very long.”

The word “together” made the knot in Pam’s stomach get bigger. “Well, maybe a little.” Pam reached over and moved a loose curl away from Kathryn’s face. “But it’ll be nice to get it over with.” She was hoping she was coming off as easy-breezy and not giant ball of nerves.

Kathryn started to laugh. “You do have a point there.”

“Of course I do.”

“You’re not nervous at all?” Kathryn asked, glancing over at Pam.

“Oh, nooo,” she answered. “I’m as cool as a cucumber.”

A laugh escaped from Kathryn’s throat. “You’re a horrible liar. You know that, right?”

“Shit,” Pam sighed. “I’m so nervous to meet your mother that I think I might need you to pull over so I can throw up.”

“Pam!” Kathryn was laughing. “I know I’ve painted a really terrible picture of her. I promise we won’t stay long. We’ll say hi, we’ll say ’bye, and then we’ll get the fuck out of there.”

Pam was laughing when she turned her head back toward her window. Kathryn’s mother was really the only person she was nervous about meeting. Her stepfather and half siblings seemed like they would be nice enough, or at least Kathryn made them sound fairly nice. They were all meeting at Kathryn’s parents’ house in Oak Brook, one of the more affluent suburbs of Chicago. Pam had received a warning fairly early that Kathryn’s parents were filthy rich. Not only did her grandparents have money, but Virginia Striker’s second marriage was to a man that was a CEO of one of Chicago’s most prestigious financial brokerages. Pam remembered Kathryn telling her that the only reason she was able to afford the brownstone in Wrigleyville was because her stepfather bought it for her as a college graduation gift. Some people got watches or jewelry, or even a car. But not Kathryn. She got a house. A really nice house, at that.

After hanging out with the Rockefellers—Pam’s nickname for Kathryn’s parents—they were going to go to Pam’s childhood home, which was more like Little House on the Prairie in comparison. Thankfully indoor plumbing had been put into the house years earlier and the outhouse was just used to tease her smaller cousins.

Pam was taking Kathryn to her family gathering, armed only with the knowledge that Pam had a sister.
